What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractors are Allied Health Professionals who focus on treating conditions that affect the spine.

Chiropractors use manual therapy to improve the alignment and movement of the spine and pelvis, they do this by performing "adjustments" or gentle spinal manipulation to specific vertebral joints. The adjustments can be performed in different ways depending on the chiropractor’s training or personal preference, for example it can be done by hand or by using specific chiropractic equipment.

Improving the movement and alignment of your spine reduces improper loading of joints & soft tissues, improves body movement and enhances nerve function. This is crucial in preventing injury, reducing pain and assisting with the body's natural healing process.

In Australia, chiropractors complete a 5 year university degree earning them the title Doctor of Chiropractic. They are classified as Primary Care Practitioners which means means they are your first stop for spine-related problems (and no referral is needed to see them).

What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Appointment

When you arrive at our clinic you will be greeted by one of our friendly staff who will provide you with a new patient form.

Once the form is completed, the chiropractor will take you through to the treatment room to discuss the form with you, as well as any concerns that you may have. They will then perform a thorough health history and physical examination (this includes a postural assessment, range of motion evaluation and palpation of the spine).

Once these procedures are completed, your chiropractor may commence treatment if they deem it appropriate to do so.

*IF the chiropractor believes that x-rays are necessary to help better understand your condition they will write you a x-ray referral which can be taken to an imaging centre.

What to Expect at Follow Up (Standard) Chiropractic Appointments

Standard chiropractic consults don’t take as long as your first appointment, the time frame can vary from one appointment to the next. During the appointment the chiropractor will ask you about the progress of your condition, palpate your spine and perform the necessary full spine adjustments depending on your needs.

Common Questions

Q1: Do I need a referral to see a Chiropractor? A: No. In Australia chiropractors are classified as Primary Contact Practitioners, you can call and make a booking whenever you like.

Q2: Do I need to have x-rays taken of my spine before I have treatment? A: No. At our clinic x-rays are not compulsory. Our chiropractors will only refer you for an x-ray if they believe it will provide additional information which may impact treatment of your condition.

Q3: What is the popping/clicking noise sometimes associated with an adjustment (manipulation)? A: That is gas being released inside the joint as range of motion is increased, it doesn't always happen and it doesn't hurt (it actually feels really good!).
